Australian Hemp for Horse Health & Performance

Why Choose Hemp For Your Horse?

Vital Equine Hemp is a natural horse care range that finally stands up to the challenges that face Horse owners in Australia! Vital Equine has been created to address the issues posed to horse owners by the extreme weather and climate of Australia. The answers to these challenges is proper nutrition and hemp provides the ideal solution due to its high Omega oil content and essential fatty acids plus over 20 micronutrients.

The importance of balanced Omegas is vital when keeping performance horses sound and well through the stresses of competition and in keeping all horses sound and happy through to old age.

  • What ? Nutrition Booster for horses. Hemp Horse Feed contains most of the missing pieces of your Horse’s nutritional requirements.

  • How ? Common daily starting points are 1 cup of feed or ~15 ml of oil; adjust to the horse’s size and workload.

  • Why ? Hemp is rich in anti-oxidants, high in fibre and absorbed in the hind gut making it an optimal source of cool-energy without the "fizz' and therefore suitable as a feed for grain intolerant horses. As an added bonus, it has a balanced ratio of zinc to copper, so often out of balance in Australian soils.  It also helps that hemp is 100% natural and Horses love it!

Vital Equine | Because Horses come from the wild and need natural food.

Researchers believe that Horses were domesticated during the last ice age. It’s been a long time since then, but Horses have grown to love living with us and have adapted to our human environment. This means that your Horse doesn’t always get the natural nutrition that it needs as Horses are inclined to a varied and wild diet. Hemp may have been an integral part of the ancient horse diet across many different cultures. Vital Equine supports Australian farmers to transition into eco-friendly hemp growing practices. All of our Hemp is 100% Australian Grown and processed!

Q. Will hemp products make my horse high?
A. No - hemp isn’t a drug that can make your horse high. It’s a 100% legal. Hemp crops are sampled for trace amounts of CBD/THC.

EA follows FEI rules where CBD/THC are banned; Always check with your governing body regarding any recommended withholding periods for hemp products.

Vital Equine Camelina Moulin Meal and Camelina oils contain no CBD or THC. Always consult your authority.

Q. What benefits could I expect to see when using hemp oil/feed on my horses?
A. Hemp is a simple superfood with no fillers in it; it contains everything a horse needs. You could see increased immunity, skin, fur and hoof health, plus improved recovery times for horses.

Q. Are there any side effects associated with hemp?
A. There have been no reports of side effects. We recommend to i
ntroduce hemp gradually over 2 weeks.

Q. How long to see results ?
A.
It may take 2-3 weeks of consistent daily feeding to see results. The optimal feeding requirements depends on many factors such as the size, breed and condition of the horse. Consult your vet to adjust feeding rate higher or lower depending on your horse’s requirements.

Q. Is Hemp suitable for laminitic horses?
A. Due to the low sugar content, they are suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis or excessive weight gain. It acts as a replacement for some of the high-sugar grass that many horses are grazed on, which in turn helps their gut health and overall well-being.

Q. Is Hemp suitable for performance horses/retired horses/horses who need to gain or lose weight?
A. Yes! Hemp feed naturally contains nutrition a horse needs to be healthy. Hemp is rich in anti-oxidants, high in fibre, Omega oils and essential fatty acids. It features a balanced ratio of zinc to copper, and is suitable as a feed for grain-intolerant horses. The combination of Omega 6, antioxidants, and plant cholesterol can lead to overall joint health and a strong immune system.

Q. My horse is prone to allergies - will hemp based products help?
A. Hemp products may be suited to of horses prone to allergies. Always introduce new feeds and products gradually and consult your veterinarian for horses with known sensitivities.

Q. How much hemp feed should I give my horse?
A. Recommended feeding rate is 1-2 cups per day as a supplementary maintenance dose. 2-4 cups per day for performance or recovery. We recommend to start with one cup in the morning and one in the evening and then increase it by one cup every two days until you reach the maximum amount for your horses with special needs. After you are seeing the results drop back down to half the maximum amount and adjust your feeding rates until you find the best rate for each horse.

Q. Can I feed your products to ponies, miniature horses, or donkeys?
A. Yes of course! Adjust the quantity of feed accordingly.

Q. Could hemp feeds help to calm my horse who is spooky/flighty/highly strung?

A.Many horses become more reactive when consuming high-sugar grasses (such as rye or clover). Hemp feed is naturally low in sugar and high in fibre, making it a useful option as part of a balanced diet. A high-fibre diet may assist in supporting calmer behaviour in horses prone to being highly strung.

Q. Hemp & Queensland Itch ?

A. Queensland Itch (also known as Seasonal Recurrent Dermatitis) is caused by an allergic response to midge bites. Some horse owners have chosen hemp feeds, hemp turmeric oils and balms as part of their management routine. Individual results vary, so always consult your veterinarian for condition-specific advice.

Q. Is Hemp Anti Inflammatory ?

A. Hemp seed products are naturally rich in Omegas 3, 6 & 9 and contain gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These nutrients are associated with supporting joint mobility, coat condition, and overall wellbeing. While some owners choose hemp oils or balms to help maintain comfort, Vital Equine products are sold as nutritional and skin-care support only, not as medicines.

Q. What do your customers say ?

Horse owners using hemp products have reported observations such as improved coat shine, digestive balance, focus, calmer behaviour, and support for horses prone to seasonal skin challenges. As with all natural feeds and supplements, results can vary between horses. Vital Equine products are designed as nutritional and topical support and should be used as part of a balanced management plan.

1) My horse needs to put on condition. Should I feed hemp hulls at the highest rate or add oil too?

Short answer: Use both. Hemp hulls add digestible fibre and quality protein; hemp oil adds concentrated, slow‑release energy and Omegas. Together they support safe weight gain and topline.

2) What is the shelf life?

  • Hemp hulls: up to 12 months in a cool, dry place.

  • Hemp oil: 6–12 months sealed and out of sunlight; refrigerate after opening for best freshness.

3) Why add oil if I’m already feeding hulls?

Hulls provide fibre + protein + some Omegas. Oil delivers a higher omega payload (3, 6, 9) including GLA for anti‑inflammatory support. The combo creates a more complete ration.

4) What is the omega ratio (Omega‑3 : Omega‑6)?

Typical hemp profile is ~1 : 3 (O3 : O6), with natural Omega‑9 present.

5) Is Omega‑9 the same as GLA?

No. Omega‑9 is oleic acid. GLA (gamma‑linolenic acid) belongs to the Omega‑6 family.

6) Why are hemp hulls better than soy for horses?

Hemp is grain‑free, gentle on digestion, hypoallergenic and naturally rich in fibre and good fats. Many horses tolerate hemp better than soy‑based feeds.

7) What are the copper and zinc levels in hemp hulls?

Typical ranges (may vary by batch): Copper 20–30 mg/kg, Zinc 60–80 mg/kg.

8) Is Camelina competition‑legal?

Vital Equine Camelina Moulin Meal and Camelina oils contain no CBD or THC. Always consult your authority.

9) If I already feed lupins, should I remove them when adding hemp hulls?

You can reduce lupins to avoid excess protein while introducing hemp hulls. Balance with forage and adjust to condition goals.

10) What are the fibre and protein percentages of hemp hulls?
Crude fibre: ~40–45%

Protein: ~10–12%

11) Is it Australian made and grown?

Yes. Vital Equine hemp is 100% Australian grown and produced to strict quality standards.

12) Do you have a vitamin/mineral breakdown?

Typical analysis per kg (varies slightly by batch):

  • Protein 10–12%

  • Fibre 40–45%

  • Fat 6–8%

  • Calcium ~1.2 g

  • Phosphorus ~5 g

  • Magnesium ~2.5 g

  • Potassium ~7 g

  • Copper 20–30 mg

  • Zinc 60–80 mg

  • Iron ~150 mg

Helpful feeding guide

  • Hemp hulls (conditioning): start at 1 cup/day, increase gradually based on weight and work.

  • Hemp oil (wellness/energy): 15–20 ml/day maintenance; up to 30 ml/day for conditioning. Always introduce gradually.

Tip: Pair with dust‑free hemp bedding for stabled horses prone to inflammation or respiratory sensitivity.
