HEMP VS TRADITIONAL BEDDING

Why Horse Owners Are Switching From Pine to Hemp Bedding Hemp Is More Abosrbent - Longer Lasting - Better For The Planet & Horses For decades, pine shavings have been the default choice for horse bedding. They’re familiar, relatively cheap per bag, and readily available. But more and more stables are discovering that hemp bedding, though it looks more expensive at first glance, actually saves money, reduces labour, and keeps horses healthier.

STAYS DRIER & LASTS LONGER

  • Horses produce a lot of liquid waste every day — often urinating seven to eight times. Without the right bedding, that moisture quickly turns into odour, mess, and extra work.

  • Disposal: Pine and wood shavings break down slowly and create bulky waste. Hemp is fully compostable and breaks down quickly into usable soil.

SUPERIOR QUALITY

  • Traditional horse bed shavings are dusty and less absorbent.

  • Vital Equine hemp bedding is crafted from the soft inner core of the hemp plant, creating a naturally sponge-like material that draws in and holds liquid. This superior absorbency helps stalls stay drier for longer compared to traditional wood shavings or straw, reducing odour and cutting down the amount of bedding you need to use.

LESS WORK

Labour: Traditional bedding needs frequent top-ups. Hemp bedding lasts longer, reducing daily stall work.

Cost Over Time: While pine may look cheap upfront, the hidden costs add up — more bags, more labour, more disposal. Hemp saves money in the long run by lasting longer and producing less waste.

DAILY STALL MAINTENANCE WITH HEMP BEDDING

  • Use a muck rake specifically designed for horse stalls. A basket stable fork will make cleaning even easier.

  • When cleaning hemp bedding, it is important to realize that darker material does not necessarily mean it is wet. Our product naturally turns a little darker as it is walked on and exposed to the elements, but the absorbency remains intact.

  • When cleaning a stall, first start with piles of manure. Fill your muck rake about half full and sift the bedding into a clean stall area. Only filling a muck rake half-full will increase sifting efficiency.

  • After manure is removed from the stall, look for clumps of urine. This will be easy to spot and will me much darker than the rest of the bedding in the stall. Rake away the clean bedding around the edges and remove the clump of urine. With hemp bedding, the urine may not reach the bottom of the stall, so remove the clump in layers to avoid removing too much material.

  • Once all urine and manure is removed from the stall, use your muck rake to spread out and fluff up the remaining bedding.

  • Add more bedding as necessary to maintain a minimum depth of 10cm for maximum product performance.

CASE STUDY; ONE STABLE USES 151 BAGS OF PINE SHAVINGS PER MONTH. ONE USES 24 BAGS OF HEMP. ALL THE BAGS WEIGH 15KG.

Pine shavings: At 70L and 15kg per bag that's 2450 Litres and 525kg of material used each week. At an average cost of $20 per bag that equates to $700 per week.

Add that up per month and it balloons out to 10,608 Litres, 2273kg and $3031.

With hemp, some users change monthly. In this scenario;

A bulk lot of hemp was bought for $1980. This bulk lot contained 2760 Litres, just a bit more than the stables was currently using per week. The user put down the same amount of hemp they were using as they usually would with pine and kept 310 litres of hemp in reserve (2.5x 15kg bags). They used the reserve hemp to replace the clumped hemp they removed but otherwise left the bedding in place for 4 weeks.

By the end of the month, the team using pine shavings has laboured through 2273kg of material and had to dispose of it, meanwhile the hemp stable used a total of 360kg. At the end of the month the hemp stable spent $1051 less on materials and only freighted one pallet once.

The numbers speak for themselves: pine shavings required over two tonnes of material each month, daily labour, and constant disposal. Hemp bedding delivered the same stall coverage with one bulk order, less than a sixth of the material, and savings of more than $1,000 a month.

For horse owners seeking healthier stalls, less work, and a better bottom line, hemp bedding is proving to be the smarter choice.
